There are three snowboarding styles to choose from – alpine, freestyle and freeride. In freeride, you ride down a mountain, taking advantage of the landscape’s bumps and curves. Freestyle centers on tricks and special skills, with spins and jumps being good examples. Alpine is a style not unlike skiing, as it emphasizes building up speed and making sharp turns.

Two different snowboarding stances can be adopted. The most popular is the regular stance, in which the left foot goes in front of the right. In the goofy stance, your right foot goes in front of your left foot. Your instructor will show you both early on whilst showing you how to snowboard so you can decide which is preferable to you.

In contrast to skiers, who must shift their weight from left to right to left, snowboarders shift their weight from heel to toe. When you shift your weight forward, you will go downhill and pick up more speed. When you shift your weight backward, the board slows down.

There is a different type of snowboard for each of the styles: freeride, freestyle, and alpine boards. Each is manufactured uniquely in relation to size, shape and materials. The best board for you is dependent on your preferred style of snowboarding, your height, your shoe size (your heels and toes should not end up in the snow when you turn) and your weight (heavier riders need a board with a stiffer flex).

Snowboard boots and bindings are necessary to attach yourself securely and comfortably to your snowboard. The higher the quality of the ones you get, the easier it will be to control your board.

As for clothing, a three-layer system generally thought to be best: the base or inner layer, the middle or second layer, and the outer layer. Pay attention to warmth, weight and moisture management for each layer.

Protect your head and ears from low temperatures by wearing both a snowboard helmet and a beanie. Choose gloves which are waterproof, durable, and have a fleece or other synthetic-based insulated lining.
