This year sees the Twenty First (XXI) Winter Olympics taking place in Vancouver, Canada. Of the various international sporting events to take place this year together with the World Cup this is one of the most important ones. Although the majority of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics events are to be held in this city some will additionally happen in the resort of Whistler and also in the Vancouver suburb of Richmond.

This is now the third time that Canada has been given the honour of hosting this major sporting event which commences on Friday 12th February when the opening ceremony takes place. It then lasts for another 16 days with the closing ceremony occurring on the 28th February where the torch will then be handed over to the country (Russia) who will host the event in 2014.

So what events can you expect to see when watching the Winter Olympics over the coming next couple of weeks? There are a total of 15 events taking place during the course of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and these are then divided up into sub categories.

First we have events that are classed as ice sports and include such as bobsled which this year seems a team from Jamaica participating. Then there is the luge, skeleton and which Britain have a hope of winning some medals in. At the Winter Olympic Games held in Turin in 2006, Shelly Rudman competing for Britain one silver medal in this event. Also in the group are events such as ice hockey, figure, speed and short track speed skating as well as the sport of curling.

Then the next group of events taking place are the likes of alpine skiing and snowboarding along with freestyle snowboarding and skiing. These events are in the category known as alpine skiing and snowboarding.

The last group of sports that are going to be taking place during this important event are those classified as being Nordic events. In this group there are four sports which are ski jumping, biathlon, cross country skiing and Nordic Combined.

Nordic Combined of all the winter sports that are events in this year’s Winter Olympics is the most demanding. As well as the participants having to complete a cross country skiing race they also have to participate in a ski jumping competition. How much time is allowed for competitors to rest between each part of this event varies. Sometimes they are only allowed 35 minutes rest whilst at other times they can get a few hours rest between each event.
